Where once the deep and brooding blaufränkisch grape was a dusty obscurity, vigneron Roland Velich has elevated it to the status of cru Burgundy. Over the last 25 years bringing international admiration to a goth-kid variety, he's also attracted students and acolytes seeking to understand his alchemy. On this autumnal evening, we'll taste through the treasures of Moric—including his Hungarian project—as well as the Austrian producers who have benefited from his wisdom. Come taste of Dr. Wunderer's Grüner, Kolfok's unconventional rosés, Lichtenberg-Gonzales's off-road Weiss, and all the blaufränkisch you could desire. With Heather Meyer of Winemonger, an importer specializing in tiny Austrian and Hungarian producers, leading the evening, you'll get a crash course in central Europe's most beguiling grape and the man who turned it into myth.
