FROM MAMOU SPIRITS: Our love for Amari began with a gift from our ancestral village in Italy—a family-made liquor crafted for generations using locally foraged ingredients. Amaro itself dates back to the Middle Ages, when Catholic monks and herbalists created liqueurs to harness the healing power of herbs. When our family immigrated to America through the port of New Orleans, they encountered the rich traditions of Cajun, Creole, and Indigenous cultures. Traiteurs—faith healers from these communities—blend foraged plants, Catholic prayers, and family rituals to create remedies. These curative ingredients were also found at New Orleans apothecaries, suspended in alcohol and served with soda water at pharmacy bars. Inspired by these parallel practices, we blended Louisiana’s traditions with our Italian heritage to create an Italian-style Amaro that honors the botanical wisdom and healing traditions of both cultures.
