THE WINE: A co-fermentation of Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Traminer, and Chardonnay. Because so many people have just a handful of vines growing in their backyards of several varieties, the standard became a “gemischter satz” or field blend and today is required to be a blend of at least 3 Viennese varieties, the first not more than 50%. This example from Zahel, farmed beyond just biodynamics, is the first in Europe to be certified by the Regenerative Organic Alliance.

THE PRODUCER: At Zahel, wine has always been a family affair. Although the Heurigen and winery have grown over the years, we remain 100% family owned and operated. Only hand-selected grapes from Vienna’s best vineyards find their way into each Zahel wine. The care with which each vineyard is cultivated and harvested, carries through to the cellar and ultimately, into each bottle.
