The Wine:
A fantastic wine brooding both brightness and darkness.
We adore Gamay for its uniquely brooding character. This year’s “Lutte” defines that trait and jumps straight out of the glass with a combination of crushed rocks, strawberries, and peppery spices.
“Lutte” translates “fight to overcome” in French in reference to our efforts to bring Oregon Gamay Noir to the attention of wine lovers all over the U.S.
The iron-rich volcanic soils that dominate the Eola Amity Hills have demonstrated the highest potential for serious Gamay that we have worked with in Oregon. These soils make up the majority of our Willamette Valley Gamay and thus the “Lutte” bottling. This region clearly transcribes site and variety and hence, a new single-site Gamay is born.
Fermented with native/spontaneous year with both whole cluster carbonic and semi-carbonic technique, as well as some destemmed traditional fermentation to capture the best of Gamay’s worlds - spice, fruit, tension, and structure. Aged in old barrels and concrete tanks, the wine was bottled after 8 months. This Gamay was made without fining or filtration and only a small sulfur addition when blended.
Easily our best “Lutte” Gamay yet, this fantastic wine broods both brightness and darkness with its strawberry and spice-laden potion of deliciousness is perfect for Gamay lovers. The deep and dark mineral tones and crunchy palate linger on for what seems like many minutes before slowly dissipating to you guessed it, another sip.
This wine will keep you guessing and intrigued until the bottle is gone. Drink now, drink tomorrow, or just wait and see what becomes of one of our finest Gamay efforts yet.
