First made in 1914, it was the first prestige cuvée created by CUNE, predating both Imperial and Viña Real. Monopole was not only great, it was unique: a blend of 95% Viura and 5% Manzanilla from the Sherry region, aged in large neutral barrels. But as Spanish drinkers began to demand more modern whites in the 1980s, CUNE changed the Monopole blend, removing the Manzanilla, and switching to stainless steel to create a fresher, simpler and less expensive white.

Fortunately, in 2014 (celebrating the anniversary of its birth) Victor decided to start making the “original recipe” again, calling it Monopole Clasico. Monopole Clasico is, in the words of The Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutierrez, made “the way Monopole was always produced decades ago.” And the wine has been a sensation, drawing such praise as John Gilman calling it “one of the most unique and compelling white wines I have tasted from the Rioja region.”

As in the past, Monopole Clasico is a selection of CUNE’s best Viura, gently pressed and then settled in concrete tank, followed by fermentation in stainless steel and aging with the lees in large neutral oak barrels for eight months. This approach produces classically rich and creamy textured white Rioja, but what makes Monopole Clásico unique is the addition of a small amount of Manzanilla Sherry, purchased from the great Hidalgo family in Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Further barrel-aging harmonizes the two varieties, the Manzanilla’s saline, nutty complexity perfectly complementing the Viura’s citrus and mineral freshness. Monopole Clásico is a triumphant resurrection of this mythic white Rioja.

THE PRODUCER: CUNE is among Rioja’s most venerable houses, founded in 1879 as Compañia Vinicola del Norte de España—abbreviated as C.V.N.E. or CUNE—by brothers Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa of Bilbao. And it remains in family hands to this day. Like other early bodegas, CUNE had French connections—to Champagne producers in Reims as well as to the Cognac house Remy Martin. From the beginning it was based in Haro’s famed Barrio de la Estación, taking advantage of the railway line as a convenient means of transporting their wines.

While originally a negociant, the Real de Asúa brothers soon began acquiring vineyards, recognizing that controlling production from vine to bottle was the path to high quality. However, by the beginning of the twenty-first-century, new energy was needed. That energy came from fifth-generation descendent Victor Urrutia who arrived in 2003.

Under Victor, CUNE has seen a surge in quality across the entire range of wines, from Crianza to Gran Reserva. Although there are records of the Cantalapiedras’ grape-growing dating to the 19th century, the birth of the current estate can be traced directly to the year 1949, when patriarch Heliodoro planted his first vineyard plot, or majuelo, at the tender age of 15. For many years, Heliodoro’s son Isaac worked alongside him, and together they built a 20 hectare domaine that is now certified organic. Formerly home to Bodegas Bernabé Navarro (a JPS import many years back), Marta Ribera and Andrés Carull are the estate’s current owners and caretakers. The couple both trained in enology at the University of Valencia, spending time working at various wineries, and eventually catching the natural wine bug while working in Bordeaux in the late aughts. Born and raised in Villena and a third-generation winegrower, Marta knew of Casa Balaguer and, seeking a project of their own, jumped at the chance to farm and make wine at this historic estate. Since taking over from the retiring Rafa Bernabé, Marta and Andrés have done enormous work on their 40 hectare estate (30 dedicated to vineyards, plus olive & almond trees, cereals and forest) grafting over the French varieties to many near-extinct indigenous grape varieties and taking the farming to organic and then most recently Demeter certification. Embracing the mar y montaña mentality of eastern Spain, they work in two areas – the continental-influenced Villena (montaña) and the Mediterranean sea-influenced Parque Natural La Mata (mar) where they manage 8ha of vines – to produce around 100,000 bottles yearly in a resolutely low intervention style, only utilizing a bit of added SO2 or light filtration when needed. Juan developed personal relationships with many Rioja bodegas and spent time tasting and learning in the region, most notably in the cellars of two of the great traditionalists of yesteryear – CVNE and La Rioja Alta. These experiences gave him the confidence to plant his first vineyard in 1975, located 5km west of Haro at Rioja’s epicenter. With a desire to work in the chateau style, Juan acquired a horse stable adjacent to the vineyard and converted it into a small bodega. Akutain has been making wine here in this small but highly functional bodega ever since, with the goal being “to control the whole process from vineyard to bottle.” They strive to produce wines in the traditional style set forth by the Grand Bodegas, but on a much smaller scale, and most importantly to singularly reflect the wind-swept, high elevation terruño of Rioja Alta.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0613/3684/6592/files/4EE63998-2658-4AEA-9FFC-006CE75F11EB_1_102_a.jpg?v=1774386549
ameztoi-rubentis-getariako-txakolina-basque-country-spain-2025
Ameztoi "Rubentis" Getariako Txakolina, Basque Country, Spain 2025

FROM DE MAISON:

THE WINE: The iconic Ameztoi Rubentis rosé is a field blend of the local, indigenous hondarrabi zuri and hondarrabi beltza varieties, grown on traditional trellises high on the slopes rising above Getaria, an ancient Basque fishing village on Spain’s rugged northern coast.
