The Crotin family planted the first vines in 1897 in the area of Maretto, in Piedmont. Today, the small estate is still managed by the family; indeed the three brothers Federico, Marcello and Corrado work together in the vineyards and in the cellar. They have been organic since the beginning and they also use some biodynamic techniques in their vineyards. Low intervention and native grapes, as well as salinity, are their distinguished marks.

THE PRODUCER: Sfera’s at once terroir-driven, but also an interesting take on liters, and bottling wine in general. As Sfera says on their quirky site: Cosmic Verve in a Grounded Italian Liter…From the Alps to the Mediterranean. Sfera collaborates with multiple small certified-organic farmers to bottle liters in limited runs, and are keen to give the producer credit by clearly putting the winery’s name and providence on the back label.

This all means that the producers change, but front labels don’t. Another constant is that the wines are naturally made, and fall into certain guidelines that are lab tested before and after bottling. It’s a win-win, small certified organic producers get to do a fun liter project, and Sfera drinkers get to explore Italy.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0613/3684/6592/files/4B2D4688-31BE-418D-BD04-C644895EAD2B_1_105_c.jpg?v=1767128027
luis-pato-baga-espumante-bairrada-portugal-nv
Luis Pato "Baga Espumante" Bairrada, Portugal NV

FROM BOWLER WINES:

THE WINE: 100% Baga. João Pato started to bottle the wine from his vineyards in 1970, becoming the first winegrower in Bairrada region after its demarcation. His son, Luis Pato, inherited this nonconformist and pioneer spirit. In 1980, Luis produced his first wine, a pure Baga, from an exceptional quality and absolute rareness that is sought by appreciators as a treasure. After experimenting with Baga over the years, Luis was even able to produce the first Vinhas Velhas wine from Portugal! However, in 1999, by personal choice, he left DOC denomination and now labels his wines as Regional Beiras. Pato’s 60 hectares of vineyards are planted with Baga and Touriga Nacional (red varieties), as well as Maria Gomes, Bical, Bairrada’s Cercial and Sercialinho (white varieties).
