Today the northern portion of the area, known as Vinho Verde, shares many varieties and traditions with Galicia to its north. Quinta do Ermízio, in the town of Ronfe outside Guimarães, is similarly old: the name dates back perhaps as far as the 12th century. The current Quinta was established in 1984 with the construction of the winery, and has been making wine in much the same style since. Today Quinta do Ermízio is owned and run by Antonio A. Monteiro, a retired horticulture professor.

The vineyards are lush and green, farmed in traditional methods: the soils are not disturbed and treatments are largely organic and only used when absolutely necessary. The vines are trained in pergolas to help protect the ripening grapes from humidity and harvested by hand. Each plot and variety is harvested and fermented separately each year to enable careful blending. Cellar work is minimalist. Fermentation and aging is done in stainless steel and the only additive is a small amount of SO2 and CO2 at bottling.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0613/3684/6592/files/BE2A11C9-DF25-4689-AFF4-BBE1E6314F93_1_102_a.jpg?v=1777417196
luis-seabra-vinhos-xisto-ilimitado-tinto-douro-valley-portugal-2021
Luís Seabra Vinhos "Xisto Ilimitado" Tinto, Douro Valley, Portugal 2021

FROM OLÉ & OBRIGADO:

THE WINE: 30% Touriga Franca, 20% Tinta Amarela, 20% Tinta Roriz, 10% Rufete, 10% Tinta Barroca, 5% Malvasia Petra, 5% Donzelinho Tinto. A mild mannered, humble and passionate man, he manages the estate’s biodiverse, organically farmed 24 hectares, 17 of which are planted with vineyards. After receiving degrees in Civil Engineering in Porto, Miguel returned to the vineyards in 2007 and fell heavily in love with his family’s estate, which is home to more than 25 native Portuguese ancient grape varieties – some of which are rarely heard of (or pronounced properly). In 2014 he refurbished the 19th century winery on the property, cleaned out the old cement lagars, purchased some big old barrels and got the old stone winery’s antique gravity winemaking flowing once again. It was then that he invited his winemaking friend, the famed Luis Seabra to help launch a new generational direction for the estate. Through their use of abundant natural resources, a transition to organic viticulture and a minimalistic approach to winemaking, the future is bright for this dynamic Douro Valley estate.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0613/3684/6592/files/12E19E53-395D-4AEA-9192-CAA4DE898CD5_1_105_c_81c82070-9e57-4009-aa5f-bd3b9cd2e89d.jpg?v=1781044513
favonius-naturally-sparkling-rose-nazare-portugal-2025
Favonius "Naturally Sparkling Rosé" Nazaré, Portugal 2025

FROM LA LUZ SELECTIONS:

THE WINE: 100% Touriga Nacional.

THE PRODUCER: Favonius is the name of the Roman God for the western wind that blows off of the Atlantic Ocean and is considered the mildest and most favorable of the directional winds, and the muse behind this Portuguese passion project. Winemakers Rodrigo Martins and Pedro Cabanita met at University in Lisboa and became instant friends over their love of terroirs and shared philosophies on how to properly care for them. Favonius wines are made from small plots in and around Armoreira and Alcobaca, both surrounding the Lisboa area and very close to famed massive surfing wave Nazaré. Through their knowledge and expertise in organic fertilizers and bio-stimulants Rodrigo and Pedro have managed to partner with the most serious of land-owners and cultivate trusting relationships which enable them to properly and sustainably nurture the vineyards for the long-term vision and health of the land. The initial bottling of Terrantez do Pico made a splash in the wine world, receiving a top score from Wine Spectator, and a mention in their article “Breaking the Mold” in 2016. António and his partners own 100 hectares of extremely low-yield, walled vineyards (primarily on Pico) and purchase fruit from an additional 30 hectares across the archipelago, from regions such as DOP Graciosa, São Miguel, and others. These sites range from sea level to 500 meters in altitude, with the oldest vines averaging up to 80 years. It is from this stony volcanic terroir that according to Antonio, “these singular, saline wines are born, or should we say, erupt.” On cold and wet Pico Island, vines struggle to escape the volcano’s rain shadow grasping for sunlight along the island’s edge, where 500-year-old volcanic stone walls (known as currais) are all that stand between the plants and dangerously salty Atlantic winds. Making wine on Pico, according to António, is a constant “battle between the sea and the mountain” and he is one of very few who have succeeded in achieving ripeness in red grapes here.
